How many times a day do you answer questions like, “How does___?” or “Why is___?” or “What’s a ___?” If we had a nickel for every time, some of us might be able to fund a trip to Tahiti! Kids are by nature explorers and learners through questions and experience, and you are their very first guidebook and encyclopedia for the world around them!
Although sometimes we might grow weary of answering all the questions, there is something pretty amazing about being the main and highest source of information for your kids. Remember that as you respond in those moments, you’re connecting with your child and teaching them that it’s GREAT to be curious! You're showing them that God created us to wonder and that there is no question too hard for God!
As your family learns more about the world God created, your kids might ask questions about how big God is (especially when compared to all the amazing things he created!). This prompt helps you turn their curiosity into a simple, faith-building conversation for your family.
God is more powerful than the biggest thunderstorm ever because God is in charge of the storms! In the Bible, there’s even a story of God telling a great big thunderstorm to stop. Mark 4:35-41 says:
That evening, Jesus said to his followers, “Come with me across the lake.” He and the followers left the people there. They went in the boat that Jesus was already sitting in. There were also other boats with them. A very strong wind came up on the lake. The waves began coming over the sides and into the boat. It was almost full of water. Jesus was at the back of the boat, sleeping with his head on a pillow. The followers went to him and woke him. They said, “Teacher, do you care about us? We will drown!” Jesus stood up and commanded the wind and the waves to stop. He said, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind stopped, and the lake became calm. Jesus said to his followers, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” The followers were very afraid and asked each other, “What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
We know Jesus is God’s Son, and God made the whole world. If Jesus made a thunderstorm stop when he said, “Quiet!!”, we know he is more powerful than that thunder. Even the thunder obeys God!
So the next time you hear a big thunderstorm, you can thank God for the thunder. Even though it is loud, we know that God is bigger and more powerful than the thunder. Nothing is too hard for God! We can always give our worries to Him and trust that He will always take the best care of us!
