God Created the World

In simple words that defy the unspeakable grandeur of the story, Genesis 1 tells us how our Creator God brought forth the masterpiece that is our world. God created everything from the thunder of the storms to the grass on the ground, even us and our kids!

As we go about our ordinary days, God gives us moments with our kids to simply look around at creation, and that can point our hearts together towards Him. Deuteronomy 6 encourages us in this practice, telling us to talk about things of God with our children at home, as we go along the road, at bedtime, and in the morning. Let’s ask Jesus to help us to have eyes to see those moments God gives us with our children to pay attention to what creation is helping us understand about the Creator!

Here are a few creation conversation starters:

• “Thank you, God, for this beautiful sunrise that reminds us that you are faithful to make the sun rise again and you will be faithful in this day!” (Genesis 1:16-18, Psalms 113:3)
• “Thank you, God, for that beautiful bird. We know you tell us we don’t have to worry about anything. Just like you feed the birds of the air, you will take care of us, too!” (Matthew 6:25-33)
• “Thank you, God, for our freckles. The Bible tells us that when you made people, you said it was very good because you loved us from the beginning. The things that make us different from each other remind us that each one of us is made wonderfully special! There is only one of us in the whole wide world, and you made us to love you as only we can!” (Psalms 139:13-16)
• “Thank you, God, for the stars in the sky! You did not have to put those stars up there, but you did because you love us and wanted to give us a beautiful world to live in. You are in charge of everything, even where each star is, and we can trust that you are in charge of our lives, too!” (Isaiah 40:26)
• “Thank you, God, for this worm we found after the rain. Thank you that you are so creative and you care about little things, even this worm. We know you care about us even more!” (Matthew 10:29-30)

Psalms 65:8 says, “The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy.” We are created for wonder and to respond with worship when we see God’s magnificent creation. Eugene Peterson once said, "Busyness is the enemy of spirituality." Let our ability to wonder not be dimmed by the hustle and bustle of life. May these days with children in our home help us to slow down and savor the inherent beauty of God’s world around us and share that wonder with the ones He’s entrusted to us!
