Missionaries live away from home and teach others about Jesus. But they don’t work alone! Lots of people help them “behind the scenes,” doing important things others don’t see. But God sees! In fact, He uses “behind the scenes” people to do big things for His kingdom. And your family can be one of them!
This month, help your child become a pen pal to a missionary’s kid - because it’s tough being away from home and familiar things. Writing letters can be a simple way to encourage a new friend.
Before you start writing, help your kids learn about missionaries and the work that God calls them to do. Here are some resources to help you get started:
After you and your family have learned about missionaries, ask your pastor to connect you with a missionary kid, ideally someone around your child’s age.
When your child has a pen pal, encourage them to write letters regularly. They could share about their own life, offer encouragement to their new friend, and let them know they’re praying for them. Here are some prompts your child can use when writing:
- Draw a picture of where you live and include your family.
- Tell them about some of your favorite things, like your favorite color, book, food, or activity.
- Share your favorite Bible story and ask them to tell you about theirs.
- Ask how you can pray for them and their family.
As your child gets to know their new friend, remind them that they can be part of God’s mission right where they are. They can tell others about Jesus at school, on their sports teams, in their neighborhoods, and wherever they go.
Jesus gave His followers a big job: “Go and make followers of all people in the world.” (Matthew 28:19, ICB) But going doesn’t always mean traveling far away. Sometimes, it means taking a small step to love, encourage, pray for, or tell someone about Jesus.
Your child’s letter might seem like a small thing, but God can use even the smallest acts of obedience to make a big difference!
